FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
CAMPAIGN TO LIGHT HIGH SCHOOL FIELDS MOVES FORWARD
Beverly Hills, CA, May 14, 2001. The campaign to light the fields at
Beverly Hills High School has reached its final stage. Michael Karlin,
Chairman of the Beverly Hills Unified School District Lights! Fields!
Action! campaign today announced that "We are two months and $100,000 away
from finally having permanent lighting."
To complete the fundraising effort, Karlin announced the creation of the
"Norman Walkway." The Walkway, which connects the football stadium to the
school, will be laid with bricks inscribed with the names of donors or
their honorees. The Lights! Fields! Action! campaign will solicit school
district families, community members and local businesses, to contribute
bricks. "This is a wonderful fundraiser because we are not only bringing
much needed improvements to the High School, but we are also creating a
permanent tribute to our donors."
The lighting improvements are long overdue. In fact, says Carter Paysinger,
Normans Athletic Director, "We're the only CIF high school to have only
one field and no lights." This has meant that our students face "limited
practices, short games, and disrupted academic schedules in order to share
limited daylight hours on our one field. " The lighting improvements will
also reduce pressure on the city fields, by extending use of the High
School fields for school teams that now have to practice in the parks,
which will in turn help AYSO, Little League and other park users.
In addition, the lighting system will add to the safety of the High
School's new track, which is open to community members outside of school
hours.
The project has the enthusiastic support of School Board members,
Superintendent Dr. Gwen Gross and Principal Ben Bushman. "Lighting our
fields is good for students and good for the community," said Gross, "and
we are happy that no part of the cost will be absorbed by the District."
